D.A.F.C. v Johnson & Phillips

Report by Dave 'Gazelle' Braddick  (Drummond's Chief Football Writer)

24/8/2002        D.A.F.C. 2  - Johnson and Phillips XI 1

Following the 7-2 drubbing of S Club 11, Drummond were brimming with confidence for the visit of a Johnson and Phillips XI. With Steve ‘Skeletor’ Braddick missing the best dressed of the battling Braddicks, 'Gypo' Paul, returned to the side.

Drummond started brightly and 25 minutes into the game they were awarded a penalty for something, it seems, only the referee had seen! With Sean Joyce wedged between the goalposts it was left to yours truly to take the spot kick. The Gazelle didn’t disappoint as I despatched the ball with panache into the top left corner – 1-0 to Drummond.

Johnson began to make a game of it and came close late in the first half. However, cat-like reflexes by the 3rd choice keeper, kept them at bay and the half ended 1-0.

Following some inspiring words and equally inspiring changes by the Manager, Peter ‘Silverback’ Neville, Drummond got the second half underway. Whatever he said didn’t seem to work, as it wasn’t long before Johnson equalised!

This was the spark Drummond needed and they began to get back on top again. Relentless work by both strikers put pressure on the Johnson defence time and time again and in the stifling heat they began to suffer. With Mark ‘the midget’ Grigg on fire Drummond should have had the game beyond Johnson and been at least four up. But they left it until the final minute of the game before putting the game out of reach.

Following excellent persistence from Tony ‘Chicken’ Bellamy, the ball fell to Brummie Paul on the edge of the area and he hit a superb half-volley into the back of the net. This was literally the last kick of the game and as the whistle blew Silverback Neville punched the air in celebration.

The only negative was the injury to Club Captain, Steve ‘Ginger’ Simpson, who left the field with a pulled hamstring – or was it a broken nail!
